Blogging about an assignment about blogging – Thursday 19th November

I handed in my eSociety essay this Thursday;
Option 2: Based on your own survey of blogs, outline several types of blogs, illustrate their key features and discuss what self-presentational purposes they serve.
At 2000 words this essay wasn’t a killer but as you may remember, I got immensely delayed not two days ago. Either way, I was pleased with this essay. My blog was not one of the few I wrote about (that would just be too much pretentious self-reference, even for me). Blogs that got a mention included:
- Nessy Productions
- Felicia Day
- Game|Life
- Rock and Roll Daily
- The Irish Times
- Design Milk
- Organising For America
As is my usual procedure, I’ll post the assignment material after it’s been graded, to avoid any unnecessary fracas.
Issued a Cultimatum – Wednesday 18th November

Me and James’ weekly radio segment; Cult Classics went out on Wednesday.
This week’s cult film under review was Beavis and Butthead Do America. A personal favourite of both mine and James’, with an excellent soundtrack, a unique storyline, a Beavis and a Butthead this movie never fails to entertain us.
“Uhh-huh-huh, he said anus, uhh-huh-huh”.
“Entertain-us, ain-us, oh yeah he did, eeheeheehee”
Anyway… Cult Classics is our 10 minute segment on DCUfm’s Final Cut. Films get rated out of a total of 3 Bruce Campbells. You can listen to our review of Beavis and Butthead here.
I’ll upload the previous week’s shows and I’ll have the new ones up as soon as possible.
As always, check us out when we’re live. Me and the Jameybaby do our Cult Classics segment on Final Cut (Wednesdays 8:00 to 9:00) and you can check out James’ LGBT show, Homophonic (Mondays 9:00 to 10:00) which I do my best to produce.
Paul goes AWOL – Tuesday 17th November
This was the day where it all went wrong! With an essay due, my laptop charger dies in action and my laptop battery follows suit soon afterwards. My laptop needed to be fixed yesterday so I rushed into the job:

My name is Paul
First attempt: The fuse maybe? I butchered all the plugs in Carly’s room (managing to break the Xbox’s plug). No joy, I needed a 13amp and the closest there was 10.
Second attempt: To Tesco! But of course Tesco doesn’t sell single fuses. So, sitting in the middle of a shopping centre I rush a fuse into my plug, commandeer one of the sockets down a side corner and discover it’s not the fuse that’s the problem.
Third attempt: To Harvey Norman’s to get a new charger. Leave the house at 6:00, arrive just before closing. At €69, it means I give up a birthday present. (Sad face).

*sigh*
But I managed to get my laptop fixed!
That’s a good thing… I guess?
Homophonic – Monday 16th November

First off, I have to apologise for the lateness of this post. It’s been busy; with all my reading week assignments due in and laptop failures to top it off nicely. I’ve left the “big one” hanging for a week now, completely unintentionally. Hoping not to disappoint, here we go:
Homophonic: one of DCUfm’s newest shows; currently the only show on the station catering for an LGBT audience. This show is James’ brainchild and I’ll be producing it for him for the last few weeks of the semester. Our first show was 9:00 to 10:00 Monday the 16th and we’d like to think it came across well.
The Lineup:
- Introduced the Show with “Spandex Man” by Mr. Scruff (a song used in Spaced)
- Paper Planes by M.I.A
- Gay community news (including celebrity gossip and the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon)
- Groove Is In The Heart by Dee-Lite
- Events, nights out things for the LGBT community to get involved with.
- Take Your Mama by The Scissor Sisters
- Snack review and giveaway: this week’s snack was some ginger root sweets from the Oriental Emporium.
- Praise You by Fatboy Slim
- Interview: James’ interview with MarriagEquality
- Take On Me by Aha
Credit where credit is due: thanks to Diarmuid Hayes for being our first guest co-host.

Not gay (but supportive)
There’s a quite an unexplainable thrill that comes from working a live studio mixing desk, having a sense of control and power over the show (when it goes right). Its similar to my first love of editing, because while the raw content has to be good, the editing (or the mixing) has to be better. It comes down to the editor(or producer) to take the raw content and mould it into the final product.
Anyway, I got through the hour without any major malfunctions, pulling up and down the levels at the right times, me and James cueing off each other nicely. James was great too, nervous at first but expertly finding his feet as we went along; new territory for both of us and another…
(BLEEP-BLOOP)
…achievement unlocked!
Listen to HOMOPHONIC: Monday nights 9:00 to 10:00. Also listen any time for quality student radio shows such as FINAL CUT: Wednesdays 8:00 to 9:00.
Fail – Sunday 15th November

It’s late. I’m tired. It’s been a long week. Any of these excuses working for you?
I’m not too worried about this fail. I’ve got something big planned for tomorrow, you’ll see!
Modern Band and Rock Warfare – Saturday 14th November

I caught up with the “Old School Crowd” today; my bunch of friends from school who I’ve been meaning to catch up with.
We settled in for a good session of Rock Band (the old favourite), Modern Warfare 2 and pizza. First person shooters like Call of Duty have never really excited me; I’m the kinda person that needs some zombies to shoot at or a big dirty laser gun to shoot with. The war-type realism just doesn’t pique my interest.
What I did like was the night-vision goggles that came with the “Prestige” edition of the game. We piled out into the cold November night to test them out. Good fun! Check out Wired’s Game|Life post about “Test-Driving Modern Warfare 2’s Night-Vision Goggles“.
The pizza was meat, meat and more meat, if you’re interested. (We’re typical boys).
Fail – Friday 13th Novemeber

My first fail! (Sad face)
I don’t even have an excuse. Today I browsed the web, sorted through my music and had a Desperado’s with James. Nothing achievement-worthy at all.
How appropriate is it that my first fail would be a Friday the 13th, though?
Video at 99% – Thursday 12th November

Production is almost finished on our video project. Just a few more small shots and it’s on to post production! Tired, but happy.
We’ll call it a win for today, and another achievement!
I Got The Album! – Wednesday 11th November

I got a bit of boring admin-type stuff with my assignments done today but what I really want to talk about is Them Crooked Vultures.
I was in London last summer when I first heard about the super-group Them Crooked Vultures. There was talk of them playing a surprise set at Reading festival. (They ended up playing two).
Now. Why get excited about Them Crooked Vultures? What makes them a “super-group”? Well, Them Crooked Vultures is a band consisting of:
Dave Grohl; Foo Fighters, Nirvana
Josh Homme; Queens of the Stone Age
John Paul Jones; Led Zeppelin
Pull it back there a second, Led Zeppelin? LED ZEPPELIN?! LED “ROCK-THE-WORLD” ZEPPELIN?
Excited yet? I know I was. This was a band born of the hype machine, playing surprise sets and secret gigs between Chicago and London via The Netherlands!
The best part? Their whole debut album is now available by streaming from YouTube. So I listened, and I liked. The bass-driven, heavy blues-rock delivers exactly what the teasers promised. The songs aren’t all pitch perfect, but they emanate the raw energy, talent and enthusiasm of these three phenomenal artists.
Dave, Josh and John Paul have created a sound that captures, amazingly, the essence and individuality of the three major bands that they hail from. If you’re not a fan of the Foos, QOTSA or Zeppelin, then Them Crooked Vultures won’t be for you. For fans of one or all three: the album is set to debut on the 16th in the UK and the 17th in the US.
On a side note; if you don’t like any of these bands, what is wrong with you?!
And yes, Led Zeppelin is my favourite band.
